See what rugby fans think of WRU's Project Reset
The possibility of a merger between Ospreys and Scarlets will be discussed at a Professional Rugby Board meeting later today (March 5).
Dubbed 'Project Reset', the Wales Rugby Union are keen to introduce a North Wales region, a move that could lead to the merger of two of the existing PRO 14 sides.
No decision has been made yet but if ratified at the board meeting, the new region could be operational next season.
Players from both regions were informed on Monday about the potential merger, Sky Sports News understands.
If the two sides were to merge, the move would be the biggest change in Welsh rugby since the introduction of regions in 2003.
Ospreys currently lie fifth in the PRO 14's Conference A, while Scarlets are fourth in Conference B.
This is the reaction from fans on Twitter:
You have to feel sorry for supporters of Ospreys and Scarlets. Faceless people make decisions that impact on people who invest their hearts and souls into supporting their team only to have this happen. It seems odd to get rid of a successful team whilst propping up a failing one— Wrighty (@neilwrightlegal) 5 March 2019
Understand players have been told today of a proposed merger between Ospreys and Scarlets. Working name of the club is Scarlet Ospreys, they will train in Swansea and play in Llanelli.— Neil Fissler (@neilfissler) 4 March 2019
Not certain that Ive ever heard of anything quite as stupid as merging the Ospreys and Scarlets. They may as well just merge Wales and the Ukraine— James Corrigan (@jcorrigangolf) 4 March 2019
Ospreys and Scarlets merging is NOT good at all.— Lee Jarvis (@LeeJarvis10) 4 March 2019
That would mean between both sets of squads and coaches i would say at least 20/25 players / management looking for jobs elsewhere.
Bad times AGAIN IN WELSH RUGBY 👎
I feel for Ospreys and Scarlets fans and players. They're two different sports and fan bases, but imagine Cardiff and Swansea merging in the football. It's just a really daft and divisive idea that ruins individual club identity.— bethan 🏴 (@bethphill_) 4 March 2019
Well @WelshRugbyUnion if you go ahead with this then it's goodbye from me! I'm 47 and have followed rugby for over 40 years. But I am sick of the total disregard you have for the fans. The @ospreys and @scarlets_rugby are the 2 best teams out of the 4 and you want to merge them— Cymro (@Hwntw_yn_y_Gog) 5 March 2019
Just seen the rumour about a proposed #Ospreys and #Scarlets merger. Crazy and unworkable. Don’t suppose the @WelshRugbyUnion considered merging the two least successful ‘regions’ - #Blues and #Dragons ? Thought not! No investment west of Cardiff is there!— Terry Sinnett (@TerrySinnett) 4 March 2019
