Designs for 150 room hotel to be unveiled soon
Cairn Group is due to be unveiled this morning as the preferred bidder for a new hotel near Swansea’s indoor arena.
The company works with several hotel brands and is in discussions with them about the city centre scheme.
Swansea Council chiefs said they were impressed with Cairn Group’s track record of working with the likes of Hilton and Accor.
The hotel will have 150 rooms and overlook the arena and nearby marina.
The council is leading the indoor arena development but, like all Welsh councils, is not allowed to build hotels.
That means Cairn Group will need to arrange its construction and submit a planning application to the authority.
Designs of the new hotel will be released in due course.
Also being unveiled this morning is the design of the new pedestrian bridge linking the arena, coastal park and hotel with a development across Oystermouth Road which will feature shops, flats and a multi-storey car park.
The project, known as Swansea Central phase one, will cost £135m excluding the hotel.
Construction on both sides of Oystermouth Road has ramped up in recent weeks.
Council leader Rob Stewart said:
"I’m pleased to announce we have selected our preferred bidder for the new hotel site.
"Cairn Group is the best in the business in running top-class hotels, including venues for big brands such as Hilton, IHG and Accor.
This demonstrates our promise to bring global brands to Swansea."
The council has borrowed money at low interest rates to fund Swansea Central phase one, but will claw some of that back from the UK and Welsh Governments.
Its development partner for the project is Rivington Hark Ltd. Their Executive Director, Mark Williams, said the new buildings and park would serve everyone from local residents, businesses and holiday-makers.
"It is more than the sum of its parts. It is a new urban neighbourhood for people."
