Campaigners against Biffa proposals backed by Extinction Rebellion
Campaigners opposed to the development of a waste incinerator in the Llansamlet area of Swansea are taking their fight to Swansea Council today.
Members of the Planning Committee are set to discuss the proposals for a trade waste disposal facility today and Planning Officers have already recommended approving the scheme.
But opponents of the scheme are concerned that the plans by waste disposal giant Biffa are too close to homes and a local school. They are planning a protest outside Swansea's Guildhall this afternoon, and they have been backed by climate change campaign group Extinction Rebellion.
Dr Geraint Havard is Chair of Stop Llansamelet Incinerator Polluting Swansea. He said the group wanted to make their feelings known to Councillors on the Planning Committee:
"We want as many people there as possible to put as much pressure on the councillors to make the correct decision; for the residents, for the people and most importantly, for the children of the local school who this will effect the most."
Dr Harvard said the plans were going to have a huge climate impact:
"Please let common sense prevail for the sake of the community, fir the sake of the people of Swansea and for the sake of the children who will be growing up in the shadow of this incinerator."
