West Cross Skatepark Gets Go Ahead!

Swansea Council's planning committee have approved it this afternoon.

Mumbles Community Council put forward the proposal to develop land around the skate ramp at West Cross.

Its plans were put forward  following an appeal to develop a number of seafront sites across Swansea and a public consultation.

Chairwoman Carrie Townsend Jones couldn't contain her excitement at the news, she told us: "This is the most fantastic news! It means that we are over the biggest hurdle and can now finalise agreement with Swansea Council to actually use the land. Obviously that is a lease that needs to be decided but we are working on that with them. As soon as we get the green light for that we can actually start building the park."

Carrie has nothing but praise for Mumbles Community Councillors Pam Erasmus and Sara Keaton - she says "They worked tirelessly on this project for two years  - since the idea was first conceived through the PACT meeting. I don't think we would have got this far without them. A huge thank you must go to both of them, but also our skateboarding community who have helped us enormously with ideas, the design, how it should be and just generally giving us a huge amount of support and encouragement right the way through."

Seasfront sites what were included in the original consultation were the car park at the bottom of Sketty Lane, the Blackpill Lido and two tennis courts at Langland.

Council chiefs ruled out any high-rise development saying schemes such as cafes and restaurants, for example, could benefit tourists and residents.

The plans have been a big talking point in Swansea. Some people say the seafront should be left undisturbed while others say it needs something new.

A Swansea Council spokesperson said: "We are undertaking a due diligence exercise with Mumbles Community Council as the land is in our ownership so we can make sure it is the most appropriate site."
