Swansea Council Leader Issues Statement Over Christmas Parade

Scores of people headed to the city centre last night to get in the mood for Christmas..

But according to social media posts many left disappointed.

Rob Stewart, Leader of Swansea Council issued a statement last night on Facebook saying: "For everyone who was disappointed with this evening’s switch on event, I can only apologise.

"This year was always going to more challenging because of the scale of construction works in the city centre which meant not all areas were accessible and safe for the numbers attending. This in turn meant we could not deliver the full parade that we had last year.

"I know officers and others worked really hard to pull out all the stops to get the route ready. However despite the effort the main event was not good enough.

"We will review and plan again for next year. I have been clear since the disappointment of two years ago that we would deliver a traditional Christmas event with Disney style elements.

"Last year the parade was well received and I expected that we would deliver the same experience this year. It hasn’t happened. I am sorry we fell short.

"I will be meeting officers tomorrow to get a debrief. Once again can I thank you all for your comments. I would also like to thank all of those that took part in the event and also all those that helped prepare for the event.

"Apologies to those who were disappointed. We will get it right next year."

Mr Stewart's comments come following mixed reaction on Facebook and Twittter. from those who attended the parade.

Vix Hannah posted on Facebook in It Only Happens in Swansea: 'Ok I know overall we are all disappointed with the parade but I think a massive well done is needed for all the kids who took part! They were absolutely fab! Well done kids!!! My daughter loved watching the dancing etc, and all the children dressed up. It’s just a shame that it was only 2 minutes long. U would have thought more people would have wanted to join in. What about all the brownies scouts and guides in Swansea? We used to always take part in the parades as a child and we loved it! Poor show not to let more have a chance Swansea Council! But well done to the kids that did get to take part!' 👏 👏 👏
