Swansea cyclist completes gruelling 1700 km to help city's homeless young people

Newton Dad Tim Needham went through punishing climbs to raise funds for homeless project

With Welsh cycling taking centre stage once more as Geraint Thomas continues his battle to keep his Tour de France title, one Swansea cyclist is set to complete a mammoth and punishing race today, in aid of homeless youngsters in our city.

Dad -of-one Tim Needham, who lives in Newton, is due to arrive home today after completing a thoroughly gruelling 1700km race through all the landscapes of Scotland, which provide some unique challenges for those on two wheels.

Tim is the only Swansea cyclist in the first ever Trans Alba race and has taken part to raise money for the Swansea Young Single Homeless Project.

Tim said:

"I get to choose to sleep outside throughout the event and have never had to involuntarily sleep outdoors or worry about where my next meal might come from other people are not so fortunate in that respect and I want to do whatever I can to help.

"Swansea Young Single Homeless Project work to support young people facing homelessness as well as other incredibly testing times through a range of housing projects and other programs."

We spoke to Tim's wife Amanda while he was racing. She explained why the Swansea Young Single Homeless Project was so important:

"Oftentimes, people under twenty years old; seventeen, eighteen, nineteen get overlooked or maybe fall through the cracks because people assume they have support around them. At tat age people are still usually living with family or at university, but not everyone's that lucky."

Amanda said Tim had been flat out in the run up to the event:

"Since just after Christmas last year he's been training almost non-stop about five or six days a week and on the weekends he'll go out an ride for about six or seven hours in preparation."
