Calls For Welsh Health Boards To Be More Veteran Aware!

Swansea University Health Board, Hywel Dda, Betsi Cadwaladr and Aneurin Bevan are yet to get accreditation as exemplars of providing the best care of former armed forces personnel.

Cardiff and Vale is only Welsh board named in a list of 47 others across the UK.

Its been recognised for helping to drive improvements in the NHS care for people who serve or have served and their families.

Care after Combat in Wales is urging all Welsh health bosses to put in place measures so they too are accredited.

The charity which has its main office in Swansea helps those who are struggling with mental health, substance misuse issues or are in the prison system.

Its Wales manager Rob Nicholls said: "It's disappointing really when you read it.  The accreditation has been there since 2017, updated in January 2020 and still only one Welsh NHS trust has been named, Cardiff and the Vale. Where is Swansea?

"I met with its former chief executive Andrew Davies last year before his retirement. We thought things were going well. He said the right things during our talks, that they were interested in the veteran population and were going to put things in place."

Veteran Aware providers will:

* provide leaflets and posters to veterans and their families explaining what to expect

* inform staff if a veteran or their GP has told the hospital they have served in the armed forces
* ensure that members of the armed forces community do not face disadvantage compared to other citizens when accessing NHS services
* signpost to extra services that might be provided to the armed forces community by a charity or service organisation in the trust
